The Early Days

OUR STORY

Under the best of circumstances, career advisement can be challenging. That’s because changing careers often signals a crisis. Can you imagine “the early days?” We’re talking about when Moses had to lead millions of Chosen People from one career (Pharaoh’s slaves) to new careers in a new nation. Wow!

IT IS WRITTEN

The Bible has a lot to say about jobs, work, and careers. We won’t get into any of that in this article. We’ll save those articles for other days. Today, let’s just look at a hidden gem in Scripture for all to see.

“So he had his chariot made ready, and took his army with him; he took six hundred picked chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt and he pursued the Israelites, who were going out boldly. The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, his chariot drivers and his army; they overtook them camped by the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon. (Exod 14:6-9; NRSV)

We underlined all the times in this passage where the word chariot is used. Now here’s the secret: The root word in chariot is the same root word used in “career.” Using the word literally, a career is a vehicle that carries us through life.

LIFE GOES ON …

Figuratively speaking, Moses and his band of Jewish brothers and sisters were being pursued by memories of their old careers and old ways of life. They were being called back to what they had hated or dreaded because it was also “known and comfortable.” And so it is with career changes.

It doesn’t really matter if you’re retiring and exploring an “encore career” or if the circumstances and happenstance of life have brought you to the edge of the water like the days of Moses. God has not abandoned you. You can trust Him.

And if you’re a career advisor facing a new day of work where you expect to be greeted by many people who have chariots behind them and angry seas ahead, you can help them — with God’s help.

Put your trust in God today —right now. He’ll take care of tomorrow when it arrives.

That’s our story and we’re sticking to it. It’s cool to be Catholic. COOL2B!
